asking ffmpeg how much below 0db an audio track is and then asking it to boost audio by that amount ends up brickwalling it instead
audacity can’t export .m4a, but can do .wav. it also chokes the whole system by thrashing my SSD. glorious

in handbrake for windows, converting from 1440x1080 H265 to H264 768x576 with nvidia hardware acceleration gives about 200FPS
doing the same with ffmpeg, nvidia hardware acceleration gives a solid 500FPS. that's 20.8x normal playback speed. for a transcode. on a 1660TI, a four year old budget GPU. inside the Windows Sub-system for Linux
